Music in the home wasn’t always played off of a baseball-sized speaker plugged into a cell phone. There was a time when music was hand-cranked, from a bulky record player. As time went on, the radio was introduced. Families would get together to listen to stories being read off scripts, or a Presidential Address from FDR. But these first home radios were low quality systems, and didn’t carry sound well.
After World War Two, home audio systems became commonplace and the sound of music could fill your home without the same static and distortion of the first radio systems. Before TVs took over our living rooms, there were beautiful stereo systems in every home. Crafted of beautiful polished wood and metal; nothing compares to these systems today. Not the plastic systems at department stores. Not your rechargeable bluetooth speakers. These systems had body, the music filled with soul. Radios stood from the floor to have space for built in speakers, and record players had bigger speakers than ever before. They may have been bulky, but there was a beauty to them. They were built to last. Today’s systems don’t have the same lifelike quality in their sounds.
Unfortunately, too many of these gorgeous systems are thrown away or gathering dust in attics today. Vintage tube systems from the golden age of home sound systems are discarded for nothing. And those that aren’t tossed curbside, just take up space in your home. Many of these systems can take lots of time and money to repair; and might not be worth the effort.
