Buying Storage Lockers, in theory exciting, adventurous, lucrative, etc. In real life not so much…In the forty years I have been buying vintage stereo equipment I have only purchased vintage equipment twice from locker buyers. My personal opinion is that much of the “Storage Wars” phenomenon is hype. Common sense and logic tell us that before a storage locker is abandoned the valuables have been removed. What’s that you say? There are many variables, the storage locker renter, the owner of the storage facility, other workers that have access to these storage facilities, etc, etc. What’s to stop any of mentioned person(s) from entering an abandoned locker? A little master lock? That’s right nothing. Think about it, if you owned a storage facility and the renters reneged on their contract or didn’t pay after the contract ran out what would you do? It’s your facility and No one is checking up on you since the locker renter is long gone. Of course you would go inside and investigate what was left, right? After all, your not really doing anything wrong since the locker was abandoned. Why wouldn’t the renter remove the valuables, cash them in and pay for the locker or to have it emptied? Why would anyone keep pocket sized collectables or valuables in a storage locker in the first place? Even large collectables, why wouldn’t the owner remove them before abandoning the locker. And what about the renters family, why wouldn’t they retrieve the good stuff? That’s right, it doesn’t add up, none of it. Talking to an abandoned locker buyer they always have one story how they made a killing. Just like a gambler, think about it. TV shows, and word of mouth make “storage wars” bigger then life. In truth, most storage lockers contain a big pile of S#$T. Junk and Crap which would cost more to remove then sell so it’s abandoned. Worthless furniture, mattresses, appliances, tools, household goods, etc. Although TV has glorified the whole buying of storage lockers, don’t quit your day job. From what I have seen over the past thirty – forty years it’s total BS. Sure every once a while a buyer hits a homerun and scores an amazing abandoned storage locker. As previously stated, in all the years I have been buying vintage/old stereo equipment I have only purchased a few pieces of equipment from the storage locker buyers I know. Sometimes the renter of the storage locker becomes ill or dies and it’s abandoned. It happens, but that doesn’t guarantee there will be valuables stored within. And if there are collectables or valuables who’s to say that the facility owners, workers, etc. don’t get to them first? Bottom line, most of what people store in these places is worthless junk that would cost more to dispose of then sell. Over time people who rent these storage lockers come to that conclusion…That’s why they are abandoned…
